An earthly metaphor that will help us relate to our pre-birth promises lives in the waves of the open sea. Waves have all different shapes, energy and timing. It is the wind that stirs and moves them.
Imagine your soul as an open sea of waves that move with thoughts, feelings and intentions. What creates the waves is wind blowing across the surface of the water. Air meets water and waves begin to move. Air is spirit. Water is life. The waves are the flow forms where spirit and life meet: your soul.
Having spent the majority of my life near the water from ocean, to pond, to river, to stream, I have experienced every kind of wave except the extremes in the sensory world. In the inner world that is my soul, I have known a number of extreme waves, drowning whirlpools, and perfect storms.
This makes me connect with the bold surfer who rides the great waves remaining upright and balancing as the force of the wave threatens to overtake me while the movement speeds on to the shore. I just need to wait for the wave and ride the wave.
Likewise, I have known the opposite extreme of being stuck and becalmed, longing for the slightest breath, the tiniest ripple to move in my soul. And I have known the joy of the gentle even rocking of ‘floating’ along.
Each of the Twelve Promises is a wave that finds its creative movement in the moment when God breathes life into us.
Ruach is Hebrew for breath and wind. In its most sacred understanding ruach is the Breath of God that enlivens the soul of the individual. I can imagine that our pre-birth promises are the unique twelve-fold ruach that we each receive, the holy wind stirring the waves that move us through life.
Perhaps we struggle with knowing ourselves because we have been taught for generations that ruach is not personal and unique, but a universal metaphor for the creation of all human life that it only exists in that moment in Genesis and . How then do we understand individuality, you are unique…you are a unique representative of humanity. Never again will there be a carbon copy of your individuality. What enlivened you? Conceived your special,
one of a kind being?
I can imagine the Holy Nights as the time each year we seek out another Breath of God and find renewed waves flowing across the vast seas of our souls, finding our unique promises reenlivened. I can also imagine the Beings of the Spiritual World waiting for each of us to open ourselves to their Wind of Love.
I want you to imagine the intimacy, spiritual intimacy, of the Holy Nights. Imagine receiving the Breath of God that is only meant for you, can only be inhaled by you. Imagine twelve holy intimate breaths.
The Inner Christmas Messages stimulate your inner breathing. They offer a language of meaning for each holy breath. This year the imagination of each pre-birth promise opens up your soul to be filled with the breath that you will bring into your daily life throughout the year. Each breath brings to you the capacity to make waves…the waves that only you can bring…your promises to make meaning of this earthly existence.
(I did my online research and "breath" appears 117 times in the Bible and a number of those times "water" is also present. I have no knowledge of how breath appears in other great sacred writings.)
