The Fourth Holy Night:
At Home with Roots
Moving from Newness and Birth which is so filled with dynamism to the Home of Values which stabilize our sense of self as earthly and spiritual beings and then into the Home of Images where we develop our thinking so we can wisely move to a home of deep feeling, our Home of Roots.
This is the homiest home of the soul, the place we feel rooted in our consciousness, where we belong to ourselves and find nourishment in the moist, warm center of our hearts. Here we experience emotional equanimity. It is our roots that hold us in place. It is this home that we must enter when we feel lost or exhausted.
Our inner home of roots is where we find our inner mother to comfort us and our inner father to protect us. It can be so soothing and provide a sanctuary for our unfolding sense of I Am.
When our biological and biographical roots of our families did not provide for us a safe and nurturing ancestral soil, it becomes difficult to imagine being at home with roots. This painful challenge means we must find our way to the gesture of forgiveness, for illuminating the reason this hard cold soil was "given for."
As I thought about this today, I was recollecting how my mother continually told me I was crazy like my father, that my teachers and the parents of my friends would tell her I was nuts. This left me feeling socially unsafe and very insecure. Just today I realized it also provided me with the freedom to be free of any norm or expectation! My mother saw me as crazy! So I could be crazy! and be my "crazy" self and write Inner Christmas messages to thousands of people around the world and create extraordinary course for finding, knowing and becoming one's own crazy, wonderful self!
Forgiveness always requires a capacity to see the ironic gift! no matter how dramatic and painful the wound.
Actually, to love the soil that embraces and nurtures my roots, that guides my roots to the center of my being, means I must let go of sense of damnation, of being pulled up and out by the roots.
Let your spiritual companion teach you how to cultivate the soil of your soul, so that your roots can reach to the center of your being.
What are the roots of your truth, your beauty, your goodness? Use this question to begin your conversation with your spiritual companion tonight. What an amazingly centering conversation.
Let me add. I was a mother to two children. What good roots did I give them? What do they need to forgive me for, so that their roots of selfhood can reach to the center of their being?
Only during the Holy Nights can these kinds of questions find answers free of the weight of earthly shadows and illuminated with the true and non-dramatic light of the Spirit. Spirit light never casts earthly shadows! But remember, spiritual light illuminates earthly shadows and empowers us to enter the shadows with the power of forgiveness. Root yourself in this moral imagination!
