Each year I ponder many themes to bring connection and orientation to the Inner Christmas messages. At some point one theme seems to have more life, more resonance and more weight than the others. This is a mystery, a cosmic intent that I trust.   

I prepare for the Holy Nights by meditating on the theme, not on what I will write.  It is like being pregnant, waiting for the birth.  Each message is  a wonderment, just like the sweet surprise of an expected infant. 

This year the theme that rose up is The Soul's Twelve Homes. 

These homes have been defined by centuries of wisdom as the twelve houses of the astrological chart. 

In astrology they are called houses, in the Inner Christmas work of the Holy Nights, we are calling them homes, the places of life where your soul expresses it's unique qualities.  During the Holy Nights, we will be looking at how we experience ourselves in each home, moving from the tiny nest of our continual beginnings and leavings to the grand cosmos of no beginning and no ending.

It's wonderful to think of all the possible names for our inner and outer dwelling places: nest, room, apartment, shelter, refuge, residence, quarters, lodgings, cottage, cave, nook, neighborhood, community, hometown, home state, homeland.  As we move through the Twelve Homes these names may help you imagine each one.

Consider whether you feel at home or homeless. Is it humble or palatial? Comfortable or uncomfortable? Is it a strange place or a familiar one? Remember you are the homemaker and the housecleaner.  You are the interior decorator and the remodeler. 

Don't forget you will be giving your spiritual companion a tour of each home. Maybe you are having them to tea or asking them to move in. Pay attention to their comments and questions. 

At the end of the Holy Nights, you will know yourself and your twelve homes in clearer, richer, deeper ways.
