Regulation from an earthly sense is about setting rules, limits, and constraints on behavior and possibilities. It implies authority and obedience. At best, it establishes and maintains proper, lasting and successful activity and relationship.
From a spiritual sense, regulation rhythmically moves consciousness between the gestures of freedom and love or self and other. In freedom you and I can experience endless awareness and manifestation of self for self. Through love you and I give away freedom in order to be aware of others and serve their full development.
The 3rd impression of I is our conscious ability to appropriately regulate our movement between freedom (self) and love (other). In the innocence and wisdom of the Holy Nights, regulation becomes creative and responsive to both. Regulation becomes full of grace, an elegant dance.
Emotional Regulation
We find more evidence of the 3rd impression of I in the regulation of the expression of our emotional life. With inner authority we establish self-compassionate laws for expressing our feeling life that are spiritually and morally meaningful, significant, and purposeful. We tell the truth of our feelings in harmonious ways that cause no harm. And we regulate our response to anothers expressions of feeling whether they are regulated or not. Regulation has only to do with your dominion over your own responses and is not dependent on the presence of regulation in anothers feeling life. (Not easy!!!)
Fear and anxiety, anger and righteousness, sadness and grief, happiness and bliss call out for regulation and the presence of the I of the Holy Nights. Regulation allows you to express your emotions, ask your questions, enter your center, meet the other...all with the same balancing rhythm of conscious breathing.
Without I-impressed regulation living in our feelings, our thoughts and deeds have no calm empowered center, no access to the conscious heart. Regulation keeps us within the lawfulness of reflective behavior and away from unlawfulness of reflexive behavior.
Regulation of Spirit and Matter
Another gift of regulation is the ability to distinguish between the extremes of idealism and materialism or between spirit and matter. We need the growing edge, which is found where the two opposing gestures of spirit and matter meet in the space of tolerance. Here the human soul is fructified as idealism bears the child of pracitcality and matter materializes spirit.
Does your soul not yearn for this creative possibility that arises from the active regulation of freedom and love, spirit and matter, and all the drama of our emotional life: angers, feas, sadnesses, happinesses.
It is regulation that allows us to keep the inner veils open to the spiritual world and the I that exists beyond ordinary consciousness. Never easy and always worth striving fo
Suggestions:
Regulation is only one of twelve Holy Nights' impressions of I. Don't demand too much of yourself. Often the Holy Nights' only serve as an introduction or an open question. Just pay attention to your breathing - your deep breathing. Breathing is a wonderful place to begin developing the 3rd impression of regulation.
Look over your relationships and your activities, how have they been impacted by your feeling life? How have you fallen into unregulated extremes of selfishness and unselfishness (martyrdom)? What do these unregulated moments have in common? Do they remind you of biographical moments?
Did you ever think about regulation as a way to engage with spiritual beings? Can you imagine spiritual beings being able to connect with a dysregulated soul life?
The truth is if you actively regulate your own emotional life, you can provide a resting center for all the groups and teams you are part of. Mothers of young children, make note!
Feel the rhythmical breathing of your soul...see what comes into your imagination that empowers regulation.
