Why we all cry "Please Understand Me!"
Published: Thu, 04/23/09
Dear ,
Please understand me! Love me!
Please understand me! Love me!
Each human being is unique and individual. This is a great gift and a great curse. We have this experience of "I am" but we also have the curse of "I am one and alone." It is the sense of being one and alone that has us crying out to be understood and loved. This isolation also gives us the blessing to understand and to love. We cry out "I want to understand you! I want to love you!"
Whenever two souls meet, both are seeking love from the other. There is a paradox here - The blessed in life know how to give love to other souls. They know how to understand other souls.
In loving you are loved. In understanding you are understood. Spiritually, this is the truth of Inner Pentecost.
How do we learn how to love another soul? First, by understanding their temperament. If you don't understand their temperament, you can't really grasp how they grasp life and love, responsibility and freedom, success and defeat.
Temperament is the natural style of behavior, perception and posture. Temperament is how a soul reaches out, grabs hold of, and pulls away from the world. It is the way we see ourselves and others - the lens.
Temperament is the way we hear the world and the way we speak to the world. It is the soul's native tongue.
There are four temperaments - four languages of personality. They are the languages of love and understanding (and the languages that isolate and misunderstand when we don't know them). If you learn the languages of the temperaments- you give others the love they seek in the language they speak.
Knowing the languages of the four temperaments makes you
a better friend
a better partner
a better co-worker
a better parent
a better child
a better teacher
a better healer
a better writer
"Better" means more successful, more confident, more engaged, more creative, more welcomed and received.

When you know the languages of the four temperaments you will know the languages of life and of compassion.
You already speak the language of your temperament. So, you only have to learn three other languages to be able to love and understand all the souls you meet in your life journey.
(No, it's not that simple. But, there is real social strength and social grace in being temperamentally multi-lingual.)
