Dealing with Darkness: Our soul's challenge in Autumn

Dear Friends,

September 22 brought the Autumnal Equinox, the second yearly momentary balance between light and dark.  How nice it would be if our souls could always have a balance between our light and dark natures and feelings.  But at least twice during every year of our lives, Nature offers us a glimpse at the desirable state of balance ... but for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, this moment of balance is followed by growing darkness.

With the Autumn Equinox our souls face the challenge posed by the conquering of light by darkness.  What gestures and moods of darkness threaten to overtake our the light within our souls?  Spiritually, we are not alone at this time.

Just a few days after the Equinox, on September 29 is Michaelmas, the feast day of the Archangel Michael. Michael is the Great Protector who overcomes the beasts of darkness. The imagination of this  heavenly warrior can provide us with compassionate courage in meeting and transforming our own inner darkness.

I've posted some Michaelic thoughts on the

Inner Year Blog.

Please visit the blog and revisit it during these months of darkness.

We live in the Michaelic Age, an age of anxieties and fears.  Rudolf Steiner wrote this verse to help us in these times.  Given our world financial crisis and the violence taking place around the planet, I want to share it with you.  I suggest you read it out loud slowly. You will find it calming and strengthening.

For the Michael Age

We must eradicate from the Soul

All fear and terror of what comes towards us

From out of the future,

And we must acquire serenity

In all feelings and sensations about the future.

We must look forward

With complete equanimity to everything that may come,

And we must think only that whatever comes

Is given to us by a world directive full of wisdom.

It is part of what we must learn in this age:

Namely to live out of pure trust

Without any security in existence,

Trust in the ever-present help of the Spiritual World.

Truly, nothing else will do

If our courage is not to fail us.

And we must seek this awakening within Ourselves

Every morning and every evening.

-- Rudolf Steiner
