Thunderbolts of I
Imagination, Inspiration, Intuition
Rudolf Steiner describes three forms of higher cognition or consciousness:
Imagination which appears in our thinking.
Inspiration which appears in our
feeling.
Intuition which appears in our willing.
Essentially, these forms of consciousness are unencumbered by the limitations and imbalances of space and time and, yet, remarkably appropriate to the immediate needs of human experience in a given moment and context, therefore free of the limitlessness of relativity. (Do you see the irony in this: no limits and no limitlessness!)
An Imagination is an unsought thought or series of thoughts that is/are true from all perspectives and for all perceivers.
An Inspiration is an unplanned, unthought feeling or series of feelings that is/are beautiful from all perspectives and for all perceivers.
An Intuition is an unplanned, unthought action or behavior that is good from all perspectives and for all perceivers.
Only an Imagination is fully incarnated into language and can be communicated. Imaginations are crystal clear, polished, and grasped in the moment.
An Inspiration must be elevated into an Imagination before it can be named and communicated. With Inspirations our souls are filled with awed feelings that overwhelm thinking and willing. They silence thinking and still willing temporarily.
Intuitions occur without thought or feeling as pure limitless will in focussed action. They are “done deeds” before thought or desire can notice or engage.
With Imagination, all identities, defenses, homeostasis and aesthetics are forgotten, or rather lose all power and influence. Pure thinking permeates the soul and the body.
There is unplanned total alignment with the moment in time and the context in space, Truth appears radiantly serving and served by everything and everyone present. When you think in this way, you are incarnated spirit. When you witness Imagination in another, it is like feeling a new star is being born in your soul. You are enlightened in a new way.
Inspiration appears in feeling, floods the soul as a movement unable to form an image that can be communicated or a deed that can be done. It needs to
be captured and stilled to be given language or action. Inspiration cannot be witnessed...it is a solitary reality, although those who are clairvoyant can see the star movement in the soul of one who is being inspired.
